This
is the time of year when Floridians start
to notice a change in the landscape .The Laurel
and Live oaks start to flush and the ducks
start to disappear from the lakes, rivers
and ponds. The native grasses start to turn
from a dismal brown to bright green. and the
Male turkeys decide to find the hens.
This is a time of year that turkey hunters
statewide get excited and take to the woods
to sit, listen and attempt to call in a trophy
bird. There are a few basics to getting ready
for turkey hunting season and one of the most
important preparatory measures is making sure
you have the gear to get the job done.
We have scoured the internet and have compiled
a list of exciting turkey hunting gear and
accessories that you the turkey hunter should
add to your gear bag. Take a look at these
products and get ready for a fantastic turkey
hunting year.
As a side note we encourage all of the turkey
hunters that read this web page to submit
any photos they may have of their trophy birds.
We will consider putting submittals up for
sportsman of the week.

Number One-
(Pop up blind) |
When
you are in the woods and want the ultimate
in concealment a pop up blind is an excellent
choice. You can set one of these up in seconds
and they are an excellent way to conceal movement.
They are fairly inexpensive
and are a real asset to your 2005 turkey hunting
gear bag.

Number Two- (Turkey Calls) |
Whether
you prefer to use a box call, a diaphragm
call or a slate call, the one thing you don't
want to leave the house without is your ability
to "talk" to the birds. Many people
have many different preferences. You may need
to tryout all different types of calls to
figure out what you like. Some even choose
to use a combination. We suggest you try a
few different calls and types of calls and
then make a decision on what you need. If
you are at all uncomfortable with the way
you sound you don't want to go into the woods
with that call.
When roosting birds it is
always good to have a owl call or a crow call
this will often get the birds talking.

Number Three- (Turkey hunting vest) |
 Now
that you are seeing some of the things you will
need this season why not simplify your setup
by picking up a hunting vest that has a built
in seat. These type vests will save your bum
but also offer tones of storage rooms and even
certain compartments to ensure call quietness.
Believe us having a seat built in will save
you some major pain after sitting up against
a tree for 4 or 5 hours, |

Number Three- (Turkey choke) |
Getting
your shotgun patterned is obviously a big deal.
It is best to pattern ahead of time to ensure
confidence in your setup. Take the time to shoot
a couple different types of shotgun shells and
shoot with a couple different turkey chokes
so you know what your weapon can do. When that
bird at 45 years wont come any closer it is
nice to know and have the confidence to drop
him. |

Number Three- (boots) |
 Depending
on where you are hunting sometimes a bad pair
of boots can ruin your day in the woods. Having
a good set will ensure warmth and prevent possible
blisters after covering a lot of terrain. Today
there are more and more innovative designs that
emulate running shoe comfort ability but are
rugged enough to handle the harshest conditions. |

Number Three- (decoys) |
 Using
a turkey decoy will absolutely increase your
odds of bagging a bird this season. Some people
like to use strictly a hen but sometimes it
cant hurt to have a jake also. A young looking
jake decoy can and will send a mature gobbler
running if he feels like he can run the jake
off and take the prize. Some vendors sell them
as a set and it cant hurt to have them both.
We recommend buying the type that can be folded
or blown up to save space. (note: Check all
air inflated decoys before going into the field,
a hole in the plastic can ruin a trip. We recommend
carrying some duck tape in case a hole is found!) |

Number Three- (hunting clothing) |
 When
sitting in the woods calling a big gobbler in
the last thing you want to be worrying about
is whether or not your camo is going to do the
job. Turkeys supreme vision is no joke so you
want to be broken up. Don't sacrifice comfort
either, make sure you wear loose gear so that
you are able to be comfortable enough to sit
for long periods of time with very little movement.
Picking a pattern that is congruent with the
type of landscape you are hunting is also key. |

Number Three- (binoculars) |
 Just
about every Florida turkey hunter out there
can think of one instance where they saw birds
across a cow pasture or across the flat woods
and knew they were moving in a direction but
couldn't make out exactly what was going on.
Those same hunters will also tell you a good
set of binoculars can solve this problem and
will recommend carrying a set whenever you are
in the woods after big turkey. Check out the
selection at www.ddldldlld.com and clear things
up. |

Number Three- (pruners) |
 Whether
you are a pop up blind person or a natural vegetation
person having a set of pruning sheers and a
small limb saw will either help conceal you
or give you the ability to cut vegetation out
of your way. These are relatively small items
and can be stowed in your gear bag or hunting
vest. The difference between being covered and
not can be the difference in shooting a gobbler
this season or going home empty handed. Carrying
one of these tools are a much quieter way of
cutting your own cover early in the morning.
Making too much noise can and will spook as
turkeys roosting near by. |

Number Three- (gps) |
 If
you are hunting large Florida management areas
and are unfamiliar with where you are, taking
a gps with you is not a bad idea. Gps units
are getting more and more inexpensive and you
can let your personal computer talk with it
so you can record all of your favorite hunting
spots on your computer as well as store them
on your gps units memory. Spend the money and
get an inexpensive Gps you can do everything
from use it on trips to mapping out favorite
fishing spots. It is a an awesome tool. |

Number Three- (flashlight) |
 Navigating
from the truck to the blind can be the most
exciting time for a Florida turkey hunter but
make sure you realize one thing. The turkey
you want to bag are in the area and any extra
noise could cause them to stir. To avoid making
a bunch of noise carrying a light can and will
allow you to walk quieter. Make sure your light
has a shield or even shades to alter the color
reducing the glare but allowing you to still
see. This will get you where you want to be
while keeping the birds unaware of your position. |
| Hopefully
there are some ideas here that will make your
2005 turkey hunting season more sucessful and
enjoyable. |
